In color printing, how to reasonably arrange the sequence of color overprinting is an important topic for technical personnel. One important function of printing is to artistically reproduce the original manuscript, which requires printers to have a certain level of artistic appreciation and the ability to master the expression of color changes. Improper arrangement of color sequence may lead to issues such as color deviation, mixing colors, and reverse overprinting; a scientific arrangement of color sequence will make the printed product's colors closer to the original manuscript, and even enhance a certain color atmosphere, making layers clear, dots sharp, overprinting accurate, and colors true, natural, and harmonious.

There are three main reasons for needing to arrange the color sequence: the influence of ink overlapping each other and the inherent shortcomings of ink materials themselves, the quality of paper, and human eyes' ability to distinguish colors. The fundamental reason is the incomplete transparency of printing inks themselves, that is, their covering power. The ink printed later has a certain covering effect on the ink layer printed earlier, causing the colors presented in printed products to always lean towards expressing the latter color or towards a mixture of back and front colors.

The starting point for selecting a color sequence is based on the specific situation of the original manuscript combined with current process conditions while considering major aspects (such as tone reproduction, color reproduction, clarity of images and text, printing uniformity, and print repeatability), flexibly arranging the color sequence.

The following are principles for arranging color sequences:

1. Arrange the color sequence according to the content and characteristics of the original manuscript. Printing is a means to express layout design in images and text; moreover, different colors embody different emotional components. Therefore, arranging the color sequence must first consider content and characteristics. When editors design graphic layouts, they often choose a base tone for layout colors. This base tone represents an overall feeling for all tones and becomes a dominant color during printing. In terms of hue properties: red, orange, yellow are called warm tones; green and blue are called cool tones. Due to inks' covering power reasons generally prioritize warm tones by printing black or cyan first followed by magenta or yellow; while cool tones prioritize magenta first followed by cyan. Everyone hopes that ripe watermelon flesh is red rather than showing purple or green in printed products. Different sequences yield different effects on color deviation; thus colors that need enhancement in visual atmosphere can be placed as last prints.

2. Consider paper properties when arranging sequences. For low-quality paper with low whiteness and smoothness where fibers are loose with poor ink absorption leading to powdering or fuzzing issues can start with yellow ink as a base layer to compensate for these defects in paper quality. During night printing due to human eyes' recognition capabilities weak colored inks with low brightness should not be arranged as first prints. The order of ink brightness is: white < yellow < orange < green < cyan < red < blue < purple.

3. Arrange sequences according to ink transparency levels. Good transparency inks allow two overlapping inks where light from below can pass through above achieving better subtractive mixing showing correct new colors if transparent yellow ink is used; four types' transparency order is: yellow > magenta > cyan > black. Generally speaking less transparent inks should be printed first followed by more transparent ones.

Arrange sequences beneficially for overprinting purposes due to objective defects like paper deformation we can arrange main colors requiring high registration within adjacent two-color groups during printing such as using dual-color machines allowing completion in one machine group avoiding issues caused by paper deformation etc., large solid areas can be arranged last preventing smudging during paper transitions additionally single-color machines print second colors after drying first while multi-color machines use 'wet-on-wet' processes thus controlling viscosity levels appropriately ensuring thicker inks print first followed by thinner ones which is crucial otherwise it may cause reverse overprinting problems.

5. Consider factors from plate-making processes etc., during printing adjacent two-color groups should have at least a 30° difference in screen angle beneficially preventing issues like color deviation or moiré patterns.

6. Consider cost when arranging sequences cheaper black or cyan inks should be printed first while more expensive magenta or yellow inks follow.

 

  Generally large area landscape-dominant images (with cool tones) use black magenta cyan yellow as their sequence starting with black which outlines contours facilitating registration with other colors while transparent yellow prints last adjusting overall brightness creating glossy vibrant hues; typically character-dominant images (with warm tones) adopt black cyan magenta yellow sequencing where less transparent inks print first not obscuring other hues while magenta then yellow enhances facial redness richness making effects realistic.

  Color printing combines technology with art craftsmanship when arranging print sequences considering artistic perspectives appropriately can enhance artistic appeal satisfying reader needs.
