Analysis of the impact of the amount of fountain solution on the printing plate
Mar 26,2018
The balance of ink and fountain solution does not mean that the relationship between the printing plate and fountain solution is balanced. When the amount of fountain solution is too large, excessive emulsification of the ink will occur, and there will be a noticeable excess of fountain solution on the surface of the printing plate, which is a very obvious situation. However, when the fountain solution is only slightly excessive, the ink will not immediately undergo excessive emulsification because the excess fountain solution must first be absorbed by the printing plate before being transferred to the ink roller. At this point, there is already too much fountain solution on the printing plate, leading to an imbalance in the normal required amounts of both. The surface of the printing plate will then exhibit a phenomenon known as water splashing. If the amount continues to increase, it will result in excessive emulsification of the ink.
A small amount of fountain solution can also cause an imbalance between the printing plate and fountain solution. The most obvious manifestation is that the inorganic salt layer on the blank areas of the printing plate cannot be stably filled and protected, exposing bare aluminum and resulting in dirty plates.
A large number of experiments and accumulated production experience have proven that during normal printing, if the thickness of the ink layer on printed areas of the plate is 2-3μm while that of blank water film is about 0.5-1μm, then the volume fraction of fountain solution contained in ink should be 15-26%, with a maximum not exceeding 30%, essentially achieving a balance between water and ink in offset printing.
